Modernising Legacy Applications Without Rebuilding Everything

Modernisation does not mean starting over

Digital transformation often creates an uncomfortable assumption:to modernise, we need to rebuild the application. Sometimes that is the right answer. Often it isn’t.

Many enterprises depend on applications developed years ago that continue to perform important business functions. Replacing them can introduce cost, complexity and risk without necessarily creating proportional business value. The better question is:

“How much modernisation does this application actually need?”

Modernisation isn’t one thing

There are several levels of application modernisation — and they are very different projects.

RehostMove the application to modern infrastructure with minimal application changes. Often described as “lift and shift.”
ReplatformMove the application while improving parts of its underlying environment — database, operating system, storage or infrastructure.
RefactorModify portions of the application to take advantage of modern architectures.
RebuildCreate the application again using a new architecture.
ReplaceMove the business process to another application or SaaS platform.

Why rebuilding isn’t always the answer

A legacy application may contain years of:

  • Business logic
  • Integrations
  • Custom workflows
  • Historical data
  • User knowledge
  • Regulatory requirements

Replacing it can mean rediscovering and recreating all of that complexity. If the business problem is simply that the application is difficult to access, poorly protected or running on ageing infrastructure, a complete rebuild may be unnecessary.

Modernise the experience first

Sometimes the application itself can remain largely unchanged while the surrounding experience is modernised. For example:

  • Network segmentation
  • Secure remote access
  • Monitoring
  • Continuous compliance

Decide based on business outcome

Ask:

Modernisation should remove constraints. Sometimes that requires new software. Sometimes it simply requires a better way torun, secure, access and manage the software you already have.
